ספירת העומר – (1) שיעור תש”פ
1- מסעו של אדמו”ר האמצעי. 1826 Trip of the Mitteler Rebbe in
Writes to his family and his son-in-law the Tzemach Tzedek about his visit to Western Poland and Germany. Visits Karlsbad.
Travels to Poznan to meet Reb Akiva Eiger. Very impressed he wrote “He wore a simple suit, a torn shtreimel…. “
Expresses his surprise of the garb worn by the Polish and German Jews.
We spoke about Reb Akiva Eiger. [Comment of the שואל ומשיב].
The humble genius. Was ‘Parve’ in the argument between Chassidim and Misnagdim. ‘I live in peace with both sides’.
Family name was Ginz ( he later adopted his mother’s maiden name- Eiger).
(Here is the family tree of the Ginz (Gunz) Eger families – Uncle Wolf is in there too (And Meir Rosanes, the mathematician also makes an appearance ).
3- Wedding letter.
Story of his wedding. His teacher/uncle, Reb Volf Eiger, celebrated from far. Made a festive party and invited all the great Rabbis of his town. [Similar to what Reb Levik did when he could not attend the Rebbe’s wedding].
Writes to his young nephew a long לומדי’שע letter about the topics discussed at that festive occasion.
The topic was whether someone can count sefira by writing the number. I.E. ‘Today is 33 days לעומר.’
It’s a general question if Mitzvos that need to be verbalized (spoken) can also be written instead
If one writes the Megilla on Purim is he יוצא?
Reb Akiva Eiger responds back to his uncle commenting on his letter.
Brings up the idea that if writing counts as speaking, how then can one write a ספר תורה? When he writes the שם השם, he is basically verbalizing the י-ה-ו-ה! And that is strictly forbidden.
Two more letters were exchanged between these two.
